What a boring task would it be to write about Snapchat here on Snapchat Daily if not for Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg’s vendetta. With Instagram Stories Geostickers and Whatsapp Status feature that ‘reimagine’ Snapchat’s video storytelling features, Facebook has now launched Facebook Messenger Day.
What’s Facebook Messenger Day?
Facebook Messenger Day are photo and video status updates that users can share on Messenger. One can post them for everyone else to see or send them to selected friends only. Just like Snapchat Stories, Facebook Messenger Day stories disappear after 24 hours so Facebook encourages the users to post as many updates as they wish. Unlike Snapchat Stories however these are designed not only to show what you are up to but also encourage friends to join you offline.
Big day for Facebook’s video storytelling
Facebook’s shameless copycat move is nothing new for the company. Since the moment Snapchat’s CEO Evan Spiegel rejected Mark Zuckerberg’s $3 billion acquisition offer in 2014, Facebook did not even hide the fact that they are adopting Snapchat features.
Facebook Messenger Day is the next steps in Facebook’s continuous effort to focus on video storytelling. What’s important about this update is that the company is very likely to start monetizing the feature by inserting advertising between the updates, according to Facebook’s VP of messaging David Marcus.
Will Snapchat fight back?
Competition and monetization have been one of the biggest areas of concern for investors during Snapchat’s pre-IPO roadshow. With 1.23 billion daily active users, Facebook has the power to experiment and offer the best of Snapchat-like features to its users giving them what they really want.
It does, however, lack the forward-thinking vision that took Snapchat where it is today, as a camera company, focusing on ways to make visual story telling exciting, fun and easy for every person in the world.
