Snapchat has quietly introduced an update that removes the white padding around snaps shared from Memories letting users seamlessly blend old snaps into the fresh stories. Previously, old photos shared from Memories would have a white border around the image and a tag in the top left corner giving away the picture's "age". Removing the white padding, as little as it seems, is a big move for Snapchat as it can help the company re-engage the users that are not always keen to post to Snapchat "in the moment" or want to seamlessly share old snaps.

While old snaps (taken with the Snapchat app and saved to Snapchat Memories) will still have a small "stamp" with the photo or video's age in the top left corner, it’s not as intrusive as the old white border. Interestingly, old images shared to the Snapchat Story from the Camera Roll will still have the white padding.

The move demonstrates that Snapchat has some flexibility on how spontaneous the shared stories can be, and reinforces Snapchat's positioning as the "camera company". The new update encourages users to shoot stories in Snapchat, even if they don't share it instantly.

As smartphones' cameras generally offer much better quality of photos and videos than Snapchat's camera, for now users have to choose between the quality and the ability to seamlessly share the old snaps.
